In 1846, a strange light appeared off the coast of Kumamoto. An official rowed out and met a wondrous creature, with sparkling fishy scales, pointed avian beak, and flowing long locks. This Amabie prophesied the coming of a mixed fortune for the area: ample produce in hand with pestilence. But, fear not, for it also promised that to see its image would be a safeguard against disease: So now you can see its image everywhere, (officially) protecting us from illness.
コロナのために、世界はアマビエの物語を知るようになった。江戸時代、熊本沖に不思議な光が現れた。ある役人が海を漕いでいて、この新しい妖怪*に出会った。アマビエは、やがてこの地に繁栄と恐ろしい病の両方が来ると予言した。アマビエは、自分の絵を見せてもらえば、人は守られると言った。
