There’s nothing charming about the Wendigo. It is a creature of the lore of Algonquin-speaking peoples of the First Nations representing the loss of humanity to cannibalism, greed, and desperation in harshest winter. The most haunting stories tell of its luring victims by imitating the voices of their lost loved ones. It is perhaps the oldest of North America’s popular monsters, nowadays often seen crowned with pop culture’s antlers and other new powers.
ウェンディゴは人食いとか欲張りを表す北アメリカのモンスターです。アメリカ先住民のアルゴンキン族は厳しい冬にそういう話を伝えることによって、人間性を失わないように警告した。ウェンディゴが犠牲者の死んだ家族の声を真似して、誘ってしまうという話もあります。この怪物は北アメリカの一番古くて今も人気なモンスタかもしれません。最近見られる角はポップカルチャーの加えたものです。
