This spider yokai lends its name to a deep pool in the Hirose River that I visited on a trip to Sendai. Similar stories can be found all over Japan: Once upon a time, a man was fishing when he noticed a spider had looped its thread around his leg. He, in turn, looped the thread around a nearby willow stump. Suddenly, with a splash, the stump was pulled into the abyss. “Clever, clever,” came a voice from the water. And so, the yokai was called Kashikobuchi (“clever abyss”).
仙台市に化けグモにちなんで名付けられる大きな淵を私は訪れた。実は、日本中で同じような伝説が伝えたられた：昔々、ある男は広瀬川で釣をりしていて、クモが彼の足に糸を引っかけたことに気がづいた。漁師は糸を柳の木の根元にひっかけた。突然、ざぶんと柳の根元は淵の中に引きずりこまれてしまった。水の中から「賢い、賢い」というのが聞こえられた。それで、化けグモは賢淵と呼ばれた。
