Among the most warmly & widely-embraced creatures of modern lore, Santa’s ladies are only 200 years old and arguably American in origin, as one only makes its first official appearance with Santa in a 1821 NY magazine. The full team of 8 appeared 2 years later in the famous “Twas the Night Before Christmas” poem by Clement Moore. Did you know they’re all ladies? Female (and expecting!) reindeer keep their antlers in the winter, but the males shed theirs. If for 200 years, gifts have been carried around the world by magical mothers-to-be, that might explain how so many can be delivered in one night. Maybe the Christmas night sky is full of matriarchal teams, carrying joy to wee ones everywhere.
