Watercolor. Bunbuku Chagama, Falstaffian version. The classic Japanese tale of the favor-repaying tanuki who turns into a teapot and ends up living it up with monks feels as jolly and universal as tea itself. I imagine a teapot tanuki would be just as well-received at a European salon. 分福茶釜(ヨーロッパ風): タヌキが茶釜に化けて恩返しをし、やがてお坊さんたちと楽しく暮らすという日本の古典的な物語は、お茶そのものと同じくらい陽気で普遍的です。テーポットに化けたタヌキなら、ティーパーティーでも同じように歓迎されることでしょう。 Hanae Rivera.

Watercolor. Puss in Boots aka Le Chat Botté aka Il gatto con gli stivali (with appearance by medieval killer rabbit, look it up). OG wingman, originally 16th century Italy, made famous by Charles “Sharuru” Perrault. 長ぐつをはいた猫。もともとイタリアのおとぎ話、フランスのチヤルル・ペローのヴァージョンで有名。ファッション+殺されたウサギ+嘘=成功というモラルです。 Hanae Rivera.

Watercolor. According to Bram Stoker, Castle Dracula is surrounded by beautiful verdant nature, but it doesn’t seem the monster enjoys it much. Just a splash of red will do. ヴァンパイアはカラーで夢を見るのだろうか？影の中をうろつき、赤の雫しかなくても、眠るときには懐かしく緑や金を思うに違いない。 Hanae Rivera.

Oil pastel. A obscure but rather bovine cousin of the vampire. Kovvmoryについてはほとんど何も知られていない。吸血鬼の一種と言われるが、実際には互いよりも、彼らが共に行動するコウモリに近い存在かもしれない。真の吸血鬼たちはKovvmoryを恥ずかしく思っているようだ。それが昆虫(だけ?)を食べる食性のせいか、それとも知性のなさのためかもしれない。低い青い光(と振動?)を放つことで昆虫を引き寄せる。こういうわけで「ムーンフィッシュ」とも名付けているかもしれない…ただしその名はよくない由来から来た可能性もある。（サンフィッシュ＝マンボウ、鈍さで有名な動物。）日本美術では、昔の作品を引用して敬意を表すことが多い。この絵の細部では、河鍋暁斎と歌川広重への敬意を込めてコウモリを2匹引用した。

Print. If you see a very old cat with an oddly fat tail it may be this boss level Bakeneko. It has 3 tails! Apparently we don’t see much of them because even today nary a cat lives 3 decades Bakeneko = 10+, Nekomata = 20+). 化け猫は三十年生きると猫魈になると言われ、とても珍しい妖怪です。もしとても年老いた猫に太い尻尾を見つけたら、この妖怪かもしれません。 Hanae Rivera.

Watercolor. A mysterious tsukumogami yokai with a flaming iron pot on its head. I’ve never seen it depicted relating to weather but I’ve been imagining myself huddled up with his flaming iron pot helmet/head & thick fur pelt all winter ❄️. 釜の頭とむくじゃらの毛皮で、暖かそうに見えない？鳥山石燕の妖怪画集『百器徒然袋』に登場。 Hanae Rivera.
